🌿 Garth B. Thompson — Childhood Memories & A Legacy of Giving
Fundraising Message to Donors — April 18, 2026
As a child growing up in Woodland, I, Garth B. Thompson, was always gathering my peers together during school breaks and throughout the school year. Whether it was sports, community concerts, or small youth programs, I naturally stepped into the role of a leader. I would rally my friends and say, “Let’s start a school program,” and before long, we were running our own little community school inside my neighbor’s chicken coop—with me as the principal and my friends as teachers and staff.
Every day brought a new adventure. If we weren’t at the river, we were picking fruits, cooking, or organizing activities that felt like real workshops. After each program, I would retell the entire experience to my peers, almost as if we were part of a community-based organization long before I knew what a nonprofit was. Even after church, I would gather the youth for singing sessions—not concerts yet, but the early seeds of leadership, creativity, and community building.
But the most powerful influence in my life was my late grandmother, Lyn‑Frater Viola Thompson.
The Legacy of My Grandmother, Lyn‑Frater Viola Thompson
My grandmother was the heart of our community. Every morning, Mrs. Edna would stop by, and my grandmother would prepare her breakfast with love and dignity. She did the same for others who came by — neighbors, elders, and anyone who needed a meal or a moment of comfort.
I watched her cook large pots of soup and share them with families who didn’t know where their next meal was coming from. She gave away her own meals just to ensure someone else could eat. She listened, she cared, and she served with grace. She was like the town councilwoman—known, respected, and loved for her good deeds. Those memories shaped me. Those acts of kindness live in me. Those lessons became my calling.
Today, GCPTALKS.org exists because of the compassion she planted in my heart. My nonprofit is an extension of her legacy—a continuation of the kindness she demonstrated every day of her life.
